The Open Container Initiative<\/a> (OCI)<\/strong> is an open initiative with the defined goal of creating open industry standards for container formats<\/strong> and container runtime environments<\/strong>.<\/p>\nOpen Container Initiative – Official body for container standards<\/p><\/div>\nThe OCI <\/strong><\/a>has existed since June 2015 and was founded by Docker and other leading companies in the container industry. The standardization committee is currently focusing on two specifications:<\/p>\n\nContainer Runtime Specification <\/strong>(Runtime-spec) and<\/li>\nContainer-Image Specification<\/strong> (Image-spec).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<\/span>Container Runtime Specification<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\nThe container runtime specification <\/strong>describes how a “file system bundle” unpacked on the hard disk is executed.<\/p>\n<\/span>Container Image Specification<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\nTherefore, an OCI implementation<\/strong> would download an OCI container image<\/strong> from a parent instance and then unpack this container image into an OCI runtime file system bundle. At this point, the OCI runtime bundle<\/strong> is then executed by an OCI runtime.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/iframe><\/a>\n<div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\"><h2>Open Container Initiative – Alliance with Amazon, google, Cisco, Apple, SUSE, Microsoft & other strong partners<\/h2>\n<p>The OCI is therefore currently concentrating on bringing the community together via an initial OCI Summit. The OCI <\/strong><\/a>has existed since June 2015 and was founded by Docker and other leading companies in the container industry. The standardization committee is currently focusing on two specifications:<\/p>\n\nContainer Runtime Specification <\/strong>(Runtime-spec) and<\/li>\nContainer-Image Specification<\/strong> (Image-spec).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<\/span>Container Runtime Specification<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\nThe container runtime specification <\/strong>describes how a “file system bundle” unpacked on the hard disk is executed.<\/p>\n<\/span>Container Image Specification<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\nTherefore, an OCI implementation<\/strong> would download an OCI container image<\/strong> from a parent instance and then unpack this container image into an OCI runtime file system bundle.
