The complexity and anonymity offered by the Internet also makes it more difficult to prosecute and combat this type of crime, which further increases its importance and urgency.
Types of cybercrime
Financial fraud
Financial fraud in cyberspace encompasses a range of crimes, including phishing, where perpetrators use fake emails or websites to try to obtain sensitive data such as passwords and credit card information; identity theft, where personal information is unlawfully obtained and used for fraudulent purposes; and online fraud schemes that aim to deceive victims through fake investments or sales offers.
Cyberterrorism
Cyberterrorism includes attacks on a government’s infrastructure or critical national infrastructure with the aim of making political demands, spreading fear or spreading propaganda. This also includes the use of the internet for the recruitment and training of terrorists and the dissemination of extremist content.
Hacking
Hacking describes unauthorized access to computer systems or networks. There are various forms of hacking, including state-sponsored cyberattacks seeking political or military advantage, as well as individual hackers acting for personal gain, as a challenge or for ideological reasons.
Cyber espionage
Cyber espionage refers to the intrusion into computer systems to spy on business or government secrets. Companies may be targeted by competitors who want to spy on their research and development or business strategies, while state-sponsored cyber espionage is often aimed at gathering information relevant to national security.
Ransomware and malware
Ransomware is a type of malware that encrypts data on a victim’s computer or blocks access to systems and demands a ransom for decryption or release. Malware also includes any malicious software that is designed to cause damage or enable unauthorized access to systems and data.
Other categories
Additional categories of cybercrime include cyberstalking, which involves persistent, unwanted and threatening behavior online, and cyberbullying, which involves using the internet to harass or intimidate individuals, often with severe emotional consequences for the victims. Other forms may include copyright infringement, distribution of illegal material and attacks against the integrity of data and systems.
History of cybercrime
Early cases
The first known cases of cybercrime date back to the early days of the Internet and home computers. As early as the 1970s, there were incidents of hackers manipulating telephone networks to make free long-distance calls, a practice known as “phreaking”. The first known computer virus to spread in the wild was the “Creeper” virus in 1971, which targeted the ARPANET, the forerunner of the Internet.
Cybercrime evolution
With the advent of the personal computer in the 1980s and the subsequent spread of the Internet, cybercrime developed rapidly. The perpetrators continuously adapted their methods to the evolving technology. In the 1990s, when the Internet became accessible to the general public, cases of cybercrime also rose sharply. Phishing, viruses, worms and Trojans have become common tools for cyber criminals.

Another significant case was the attack by Kevin Mitnick, one of the best-known hackers, who broke into several large companies in the 1990s and was eventually caught by the FBI. His actions contributed to the passing of the “Computer Fraud and Abuse Act” in the USA.
The “ILOVEYOU” virus in 2000, which spread to millions of computers worldwide and caused enormous damage, led to an increased awareness of the need for cyber security in companies and among end users.
More recently, cases such as the “Sony Pictures hack” in 2014 and the “WannaCry”
ransomware attack
in 2017, both of which had far-reaching consequences, have underlined the urgency of strengthening global and national security measures and improving cooperation between the private and public sectors.

The prevention of cybercrime is an essential part of the modern information society and forms the foundation of any cybersecurity strategy.
