What is a content delivery network?
The main purpose of a content delivery network (CDN) is to enable users of a website to download content, i.e. files, more quickly.
How does a content delivery network work?
The content delivery network achieves this faster content download by using globally distributed cloud data centers that are configured by the CDN operator to store content. Technically, the CDN works on the user side in such a way that the web browser of the content user automatically recognizes a CDN link as such and then uses it directly from the content library that is geographically closest to the user in terms of their dial-up node and the route to the application.
To ensure reliability, a CDN uses a minimum of two DNS providers to guarantee DNS redundancy. The round-robin procedure defined in this way means that if one provider fails, the second provider of the CDN remains online, so that content availability is guaranteed for CDN users in any case.

Website visitors are often impatient if a website does not load immediately, i.e. is not actually usable. With the technology of a content delivery network in the background, it is possible to effectively prevent website content from not being delivered immediately. An active CDN therefore has a positive effect on the usability of websites. Location-specific features can also be taken into account very well with a CDN. This refers to GEO positions or, more precisely, IP-based locations of website users, which play a role in the delivery speed of websites via the access route.
